How to Wash a Human Hair Wig or Hair Replacement System: Step by Step

Learn when to wash a human hair wig or removable hair system and follow the complete Pure Wash, Pure Conditioner, Foundation Mist, drying, and styling routine.

Washing alternative hair should restore movement, freshness, without stressing the hair, construction, or attachment points. The correct method depends on whether the hair is removable, semi permanently attached, or installed as extensions.

The detailed steps below are for compatible removable human hair wigs, toppers, hair replacement systems. Semi permanent systems, installed extensions, are not removed for this routine. Use the attached hair guidance below. Follow the instructions for your exact attachment method first.

Choose the correct wash path

  • Removable wig or topper: follow the complete off head steps below.
  • Semi permanent wig, topper, or hair system: leave the system attached. Cleanse the accessible scalp, hair, according to your installation plan. Do not soak, pull, or pick at tape, adhesive, bonds, knots, or the base.
  • Installed extensions: cleanse between rows or attachment areas as directed. Keep conditioner, leave in products, away from bonds, beads, wefts. Dry the roots, the attachment points, fully.

If you are unsure which path applies, contact Moxi Loxi before washing or changing your routine.

How do you know it is wash day?

Wash when the hair no longer moves or styles normally after a light refresh, when the base no longer feels fresh, or when sweat, oil, dead skin cells, odor, environmental debris, styling products have accumulated. Exercise, humidity, frequent wear, styling habits may shorten the time between washes.

If odor is the only issue and the piece is not ready for a full wash, Aura Restore can refresh it between washes. It does not replace cleansing when buildup is present.

What you will need

Step by step washing instructions

The following steps are for removable pieces.

1. Inspect and detangle before adding water

Check the base, lace, clips, combs, attachment areas. Support the hair near the base. Detangle from the ends upward. Do not force the brush through a knot or drag it across lace.

2. Prepare cool to lukewarm water

Use a clean basin or sink. Follow the directions on your current Pure Wash label. Avoid hot water, which can stress the hair, alter some fibers, affect delicate construction materials.

3. Wet the piece gently

Keep the hair moving in one direction. Do not bunch, rub, twist, or wring it. Handle the lace front, the hand tied areas, with particular care.

4. Cleanse with Pure Wash

Distribute Pure Wash gently through the hair, the base, according to the label. Lightly press the cleanser through compatible cap areas. Do not scrub the base or create circular friction through the lengths.

5. Rinse thoroughly

Rinse with cool to lukewarm water until the cleanser is completely removed. Keep the water, the hair, flowing in the same direction to reduce tangling.

6. Condition the mid lengths and ends

Apply Pure Conditioner through the mid lengths, the ends. Leave it on for two to three minutes, then rinse thoroughly. Keep conditioner away from lace, knots, clips, polyurethane, tape, bonded areas, unless the instructions for your piece say otherwise.

7. Blot, never rub

Support the piece. Gently blot away excess water with a clean towel. Do not twist or wring the hair. Rough towel drying creates friction. It can disturb the construction.

8. Apply Foundation Mist and detangle

Place the piece on the suction styling stand. Mist Foundation Mist lightly through the towel dried lengths, the ends. It provides weightless hydration, slip, for easier detangling. Begin at the ends, then work upward while supporting the hair near the base.

9. Dry and style appropriately

Allow the piece to dry according to the needs of the hair, the construction. Confirm whether your piece is human hair, heat friendly synthetic, or traditional synthetic before using heat. Follow the temperature guidance for that exact piece.

For volume, apply Tease Volume & Body Mist to damp roots, then blow dry for lift. For the final hold, use Fixation as a light, flexible, brushable finish. Use Luster Mist sparingly through the lengths, the ends, when the hair needs additional polish.

Before wearing or storing

The hair, the base, must be completely dry. Return a removable piece to THE VOYAGE, where the supported shape, the protective case, help preserve the style. They protect it from dust, pets, children, accidental crushing.

When to ask for professional help

Contact Moxi Loxi if the piece continues to tangle after proper washing, the lace or base is worn, clips or combs are loose, shedding has increased, the fit has changed, or the style will not return. The next step may be professional maintenance, restyling, customization, or a repair assessment rather than more product.

For a semi permanent system or installed extensions, contact your specialist if the attachment loosens, shifts, lifts, feels painful, stays damp, develops persistent odor, or the scalp becomes irritated. Do not attempt an unplanned removal or apply additional adhesive without guidance.
