A well made piece can last a long time or a short one, and the difference is almost never the piece. It is friction, heat, product buildup, and how it spends the eight hours you are asleep. Care is not an upsell here. It is the cheapest way to protect what you already spent.
The four things that shorten a piece's life
Friction. Sleeping in a piece, rough towel drying, brushing from the top down. Every one of those pulls hair out of knots that cannot be put back.
Heat. Hot tools on hair that no longer receives anything from a scalp. It does not recover the way growing hair does.
Buildup. Heavy oils and conditioners near knots, tape and bonded areas soften the hold and dull the hair.
Neglect at the base. Most pieces fail at the cap, the lace or the clips long before the hair gives out.
The routine
Every wear. Detangle from the ends upward, never from the roots down. Use the Eco Brush or Eco Comb, and mist with Foundation first so the comb glides rather than drags.
When it needs it. There is no universal schedule. Wash when the hair stops styling and moving the way it normally does, when the base no longer feels fresh, or when sweat, oil, odor or product have built up. Exercise, heat, humidity and frequent styling all move that day closer. Use Pure Wash and Pure Conditioner. Between washes, Aura Restore neutralizes odor on scalp, wigs, toppers and extensions.
Overnight. Take removable pieces off before bed. If you wear an integrated or extended wear system, follow that system's instructions. The Silk Sleep Set and silk pillowcase reduce friction, though they do not replace proper detangling and maintenance.
Storage. Off your head and holding its shape. A Hair Hanger keeps a piece from flattening in a drawer.
Staying put
Security is comfort. If you are thinking about whether it will move, you are not thinking about anything else.
- No Slip Grip Cap and the Silicone Wig Grip Band for hold without adhesive, which is often all that is needed.
- Bondzilla for a secure clear hold, with Pure Detach to take it off gently. Patch test before first use.
- Pro Extension Tape, No Sew Hairpiece Clips and preloaded nano rings for attachment work.
- Wig Grid Knot Erase for a smooth, natural finish at the knots.
Travel
THE VOYAGE is the whole routine in a form that fits a carry on, so a trip does not become the reason a piece declines. There is also an Essential Wig Bundle if you are starting from nothing.
When to bring it in rather than buy something
Contact us when you start noticing shedding, a change in fit, worn lace, loose clips, reduced density, dryness or difficulty styling. Depending on the piece we may be able to clean, condition, restyle, cut, refresh color, replace clips or combs, alter the fit, adjust density, repair lace or add hair. Some of that we do in the studio, and more extensive work is coordinated with one of our specialized factories. We assess the piece, tell you honestly what is worth doing, and confirm timing and pricing before any work begins.
Many people eventually keep two pieces so one can be worn while the other is being cared for. A restored piece often becomes the practical one for exercise, travel and swimming.
